For the final week of BM, I have an international theme. This week, we are going to see about Italian Meal Structure. Just like ours, Italians also have Breakfast – Colazione, Lunch – Pranzo, Evening Snacks – Merenda and Dinner – Cena. For Breakfast, dishes like hot coffee with milk, hot chocolate and bread or cookies are served with milk or coffee. For lunch, the first course il primo has pasta or rice or bread, second course il secondo has meat or fish served with a side dish il contorno which is vegetable or fruit. And the afternoon snack Merenda has cakes, ice cream/gelato, brioches, fruit salads and other dishes similar to them. There is also an elaborate formal meal structure which starts with an appetizer/ antipasto and finishes off with Digestivo, which is basically liquor or beverages which aids digestion. To know more about the formal meal structure, read the WIKI page.
I have decided to do three of the beverages form the Italian cuisine, which can be served for breakfast, dessert and snacks. Italians love their espresso just like we love our filter coffee. The amount of desserts made with coffee are astounding. I chose to make a few this week. My daughter loves her coffee. Her day starts with a huge cup of delicious butter mocha. And she has her iced coffee regularly after school. So I knew that she would love all these beverages. The first one is a mix of heat and cold. Vanilla ice cream served with hot espresso is a pretty famous drink in Italy. Most of the cafes in Italy puts this Affogato under Desserts/ Dolce category while some include it in beverages. There are some variations available, but today we will talk about affogato. This is so easy to make if you have made ice cream or have ready in freezer. You need to make a cup of hot thick coffee. As the ice cream is sweet, you don’t have to add sugar to the coffee. Make a thick decoction in your coffee filter or take a much easier route with instant coffee. I had every thing ready and once Sruti came home, I assembled it immediately and served it to her. She was on the moon after tasting it. And I surely loved her expression.

I love affogato, used to have it in Barista when I was in India. Loved your easy recipe. Very well explained Italian meal structure.
Hot and cold combos are always very interesting , hot coffee with ice cream sounds great , though I have never tried it .
I am still wondering why I have never tried this before! Somehow I have not started giving my girls much coffee or tea, and they don’t seem to like drinking it much too… Better to not get them addicted to it… I better keep this as my next treat meal… hehe…
I will definitely try this during summer, it sounds so delicious! Right now with the weather and the cough around at home, I can’t serve ice cream.
Wow I love coffee. This cold coffee sounds so good and refreshing. Perfect for summers.
Wow ice cream and coffee… I have heard about it a lot, but never tried it. I should give your recipe a try. Great one Gayathri. I really loved your detailed introduction.
Wow! That is such a cool recipe. I am sure my coffee loving husband would love to try this.
