Sugar Free Rava Kesari

Today is the first day of Blogging Marathon #21. I will be posting under Sweets for diabetics for the three days. Rava kesari is the traditional south Indian sweet which is prepared for every festival and it has a place in the marriage parties. It is very much part of the culture. I just wanted to try out a sugar free version so  that even a diabetic can indulge in this sweet treat during festivals. I used Sugar Free- a substitute for sugar with low calorie. It is actually measured same as sugar and you will not be able to find out the difference. I served it to my daughter and she liked it very much. She finished all the slices I served her and was asking for more. I used little ghee and added some olive oil. But it tasted great. I also added almonds and raisins to give it a nice crunch.

Ingredients:
Fine Sooji/ Rava-1/4cup
Sugar Substitute-1/8cup
Water-3/4cup
Olive Oil-1 1/2tsp
Ghee- 2tsp
Almond-5
Golden Raisins-5
Cardamom Powder-a pinch
Yellow Food Colour-2-3drops

Procedure:
  1. Dry roast rava until slightly brown. Transfer to a plate and allow it to cool.
  2. In a pan add 1tsp of ghee and add chopped almonds and raisins.
  3. When they turn golden add water. Add cardamom powder and food colour.
  4. When it comes to boil add rava and stir continuously to avoid formation of lumps.
  5. When the water is fully absorbed by the rava add sugar and mix well.
  6. Add the oil and remaining ghee.
  7. Give a nice stir and when the mixture leaves the sides transfer on to a plate.
  8. Allow it to cool.
  9. Slice it to desired shape and serve.

  1. That looks interesting!!! My suggestion to you – generally artifical sweeteners are sweeter than sugar, so you will need lesser amount. Second, I will give foods made with artificial sweeteners only to people with diabetics and not to all!! – But I know there are lot of foods on the market which come with artificial sweeteners!! It is my suggestion as you mentioned that you gave it to your daughter. I do not want to start a big argument regarding eating the artificial sweeteners, but again it is is my suggestion!!

  2. I personally dont like the taste of sweeteners but that was ages ago when i had it…i really pity people who have food restrictions, so I guess this is defnitely a good help

  3. The kesari looks so yum. I tend to agree with Sowmya, was hesitating a bit to write but artificial sweeteners are not all that good as they sound.
