Today is the third week of Blogging Marathon#20 and I am posting under Vinayagar Chaturti Specials. When you think of Lord Ganesha, the first offering that comes to mind is kozhukkattai. So I decided to prepare three types of kozhukkattai for this BM. The first kozhukkattai I decided to do is the pidi kozhukkattai. This doesn’t need filling. The dough itself is sweet with added brown sugar (Vellam) and grated coconut. This is offered to Lord Ganesha on the Vinayaga Chaturthi. This is also called as Panguni Kozhukkattai. During the tamil month of panguni, many thiruvizhas (festivals) are celebrated. For the thiruvizha, Goddess Sakthi is worshipped. One day ladies bring maa vilakku ( a lamp made with rice flour and brown sugar which is edible) to the temple as offering to the Goddess. The flour is then taken back home and made into these kozhukkattai. These are very tasty. The kozhukkattai has a firm outer skin but soft inside. MIL used to prepare this with karuppatti (jaggery) but I used brown sugar/ vellam instead. Still it tasted great.
Ingredients:
Rice Flour prepared for kozhukkattai/ Kozhukkattai Maavu-1 1/2cups (click on the link to know about the preparation)
Brown Sugar/ Vellam-1cup
Water-1/2cup
Grated Coconut-1cup
Cardamom Powder-1/2tsp
Procedure:
1. In a pan add sugar and water and bring it to boil.
2. When the sugar completely melts, remove from heat and filter the syrup to get rid of impurities.
3. Pour it again into the pan and add grated coconut and cardamom powder.
4. When it starts boiling, add the rice flour and mix it fast to get a smooth mixture.
5. Cook on low flame until the mixture leaves the sides.
6. Remove from flame and allow it to cool. Once cool you will get a smooth and soft dough. Knead it well.
7. Pinch small portions of the dough. Roll it into a ball. Place it inside the palm and press with your fingers as shown.
8. Arrange the kozhukkattais in a steamer.
9. Steam cook for 10-15 minutes.
10. Allow it to cool before serving.

yummy and tempting kuzhakattais.
I tried something similar with Ragi Flour long back, it was good when fresh and warm… But it got very much harder when cooled off.. I am not sure why that happened. I should try it again though, eating it fresh was good in taste
