Conversion of Recipe Measurements

This chart will help you in converting recipe measurements according to your preference. I have given temperature chart, cups and weight chart and teaspoons and weight chart for your use.
Temperature Chart:
First we will deal with Oven Temperatures. In India, you can see ovens marked with Celsius whereas while reading recipes from US bloggers, I come across temperature in Fahrenheit. This conversion chart can be used while converting temperatures. I usually give recipes with Celsius. So if you want to see what it is in Fahrenheit, please go through the chart.

Cup Measurements:
Next we will deal with cup measurements. The cups shown below are those I use in my day to day cooking. There are 4 cups ranging from 1 cup to 1/4 cup. I will give the equivalent weight of cup measures so that you can easily convert my recipes. For every ingredient the weight varies for one cup. I am trying to give you the weight of most used ingredients below.

Cup Measurement (1 cup)Weight in Grams

Sugar220
Besan140
Flour/ Maida130
Sooji/ Rava170
Moong Dhal200
Peanuts160
Roasted Gram120
Channa Dhal180
Toor Dhal200
Urad Dhal210
Rice210
Rice Flour120
Quick Cooking Oats100
Butter200

Teaspoons and Tablespoons:

Teaspoons and tablespoons also form an important part of measuring equipment. Usually oil, salt, baking powder, honey and baking soda are measured using spoons. There is a basic formula used in calculating the grams.

1 Teaspoon ————-5 gm

2 Teaspoons———-10 gm

3 Teaspoons————–15 gm

1 Table spoon —————–3 teaspoons

1 Table Spoon—————-15 gm

Teaspoon is usually referred as tsp and Table spoon is referred as tbs in my recipes. Using this chart you can always convert the given tsp and tbs measurements to gm.

Measuring Jar:

Having a measuring jar in the kitchen is useful in many ways. Measuring liquids is very easy when you have a jar. This jar measures up to one litre which is equal to 5 cups. Measuring milk, water and cream for baking is easier when you have this. But if you have only cups then 1 cup of any liquid equals 200 ml. You need to calculate accordingly.

    1. Hi Sudha, I have no experience with microwave but what I have gathered from friends is, you select the convection mode to enable the fan forced heating, set timer for 15 minutes to preheat. After 15 minutes you can place the batter in oven for baking. And if a recipe says 200C for an OTG, then you need to set MW convection to 180C, i.e. 20C lower. Hope this helps..

  4. Hi Gayathri,
I wanted to know that ur measuring cup is of 200 ml or 240 ml? In India what is the standard cup size?
    Thanks in Advance…

  5. Hi mam
I have a doubt. If I need to do a 1/2kg or 1kg cake . How to measure the ingredients and which size of pan will suit to1/2kg or 1kg cake. Because if I know the measurement for an 1/2kg cake then I can double the ingredients for the 1kg cake. So pls help me mam.
    Thanks in Advance
    Devi

    1. Usually an 8″ cake gives you 500 gm of cake. But if you are aiming for a 500 gm with frosting, the go for 250 gm of cake and 250gm of frosting. For 250 gm of cake a 6″ cake would work.

  6. Gayathri can I add trutti fruitti in this cake
I know you have a receipe of truitti fruitti but that receipe is with condense milk. A humble request can you simultaneously add measurements in gms along with cup measurements.

  7. Hii Gayatri! As usual ur your posts are very helpful. However while measuring dry ingredients like all purpose flour your one cup says 130 grams while my 1 cup is equal to 200 grams. Shall I use measuring scale to measure the flour or I need to replace the cups?

    1. Thank you. Usually cups come in ml. 200 ml, 250 ml and so on. Mine is a 200 ml cup and with that cup, one cup of flour measures 130 gm and 1 cup of sugar measures 200 gm. If it is tough to do the cup measures, better use weighing scale. Recently I have started using weighing scale and feel that it is the best method to get perfect results every time.

  8. Hi
    Gayathri
My measuring cup is 250ML and I don’t understand how much of Maida in Grams.
Most of the websites are showing if cup size is 250ML then 130 Gms of Maida we can measure with it but on ur website urs cup size is 200ML and u r saying the same thing that it will measure 130 of Maida in Grams.
    Please clear my confusion
    Thanks.

  9. Hello, I am anagha khisty. I liked your video. Can you please tell me how much is 1cup oil, 1 cup condense milk, 1 cup milk powder and 1cup ghee, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup paneer and sour cream(chakka)1cup curd a d 1 cup hung curd
    in (1 cup = 200ml cup.)

    1. One cup – 200 ml – equals 130 gm flour, 200 ml of any liquid, 200 gm sugar and 200 gm butter. Hung curd might be a little heavier than the curd. So one cup curd would be 200 ml, hung curd might be 250-300 gm, but I haven’t weighed it personally.
