COOKING BASICS

Manathakkali / Black Night Shade Berry

When I went to the garden I saw the manathakkali plant in full bloom. There were so many flowers, fruits and raw berries. My mom used to prepare puli kulambu with the berries. The greens are also used in dishes such as masiyal and poriyal. The plant has medicinal properties and the greens are used to treat mouth ulcers. I was very happy to see the berries and I at once brought a bowl and collected the berries. The berries in tamarind based gravy tastes absolutely delicious. The ripe berries can be relished as it is.

I will post the recipe for the gravy in my other blog soon.
