Whole wheat crumpets recipe are tiny pan fried bread which have crispy crust and a soft fluffy crumb, perfect to be served for breakfast or as a tea time treat.
Crumpets are tiny griddle cakes/ breads from Britain. They are served as tea time treats. Crumpets are not baked, but are fried on a skillet or griddle with crumpet rings. Batter is fermented and fried to get a spongey cake with crispy crust. Later, you need to toast thembefore serving.
I have heard about crumpets, but never thought about making them until a reader messaged me for the recipe. I promised her that I will post the recipe soon, but still I kept procrastinating.
Whole wheat crumpets recipe – Stepwise Photos
Here is a step wise photo slide for you to easily understand the process. The batter is quite easy to make, the only trouble will be during cooking/ frying the crumpets. It takes a few tries to get it right. Do not flip the crumpets as it will make the crumpet a bit flat. Cook only on one side and it will look so good.
Whole wheat crumpets Recipe – Ingredients used
The ingredients used for crumpets are pretty basic. Let me get you the list.
Flour – As this is whole wheat version, I have used Ashirwad Sharbati atta. I always use this atta for my cakes and breads, as it is lighter than most of the wheat flour available and it also doesn’t give you a weird after taste.
If you are not into making whole wheat version, you can use regular maida. You will get a lighter bread.
Instant Yeast – I have used Weissmill Instant yeast in the recipe. You can ad it directly to the dry mix and it gets activated easily. It is a quite forgiving yeast so best for beginners. If using dry yeast, you need to activate it before you add it to the batter. Don’t add it directly to the dry ingredients.
Baking Powder – The combination of baking powder and yeast makes the crumpets fluffy and also gives you an amazing flavour. I usually use this combination in crackers which gives wonderful lightness. So don’t miss it out in the recipe. I have used Urban Platter brand baking powder.
Sugar – I haven’t added it, but if you like some sweetness in the bread, add two tablespoon while mixing the dry ingredients. You can use sugar in any form, white/ brown/ jaggery/ honey.
Water – Water binds all the ingredients together. The quantity of water depends on the type of flour used. If using maida, you need lesser water and if using whole wheat flour, you need more. So watch the video and adjust water quantity to get the correct consistency.
Butter – Unsalted butter is the best one you can use for this recipe. If you have home made butter, go for it. It will add amazing flavour than the store bought butter.
Whole wheat crumpets recipe – Method of Cooking
Crumpets are cooked in crumpet rings, which will give you those neat tiny breads. When you try to cook it without the rings, the batter would spread out and you will end up with pancakes. I have used my omelette ring to make the crumpets, but you can also use the burger rings available in Amazon.
The size would be slightly larger but they would turn out beautiful. I checked the crumpet rings in Amazon, they are pretty expensive. So better use something that is easily available than spending too much money on the rings.
Finally I made them today for my kiddo’s breakfast. I have skipped adding sugar in the batter, but if you like to add sugar, then go ahead and add two tbs of sugar while mixing the batter.
I also made a short video of me frying the crumpets, it would help you visualize the consistency of the batter as well as the way it cooks on the skillet. I have posted it in my IG, so please take a look over there and also don’t forget to follow me there.
