Tofu is a great substitute for Paneer and is power packed. It is made from the milk extracted from soy beans. I have prepared tofu at home. But as it is a lengthy process, I usually buy a pack of tofu whenever I visit the super market. I got bored of preparing butter masala with tofu. So when I bought this pack, I was thinking of a recipe which could go very well with dosa and finally ended planning this kurma. Thakkali kurma is my hubby’s fav combination for dosas and I added tofu pieces to make it more tasty. But I didn’t tell this to my daughter. She thought it was paneer and enjoyed it. Why spoil the scene by telling her that it was tofu?
Ingredients:
For The Paste:
Tomato-4
Grated Coconut-1/2 cup
Garlic-5-6 pods
For The Gravy:
Oil-2 tbs
Cinnamon-a small stick
Cloves-3
Star Anise-1
Onion-2
Tofu-200 gm ( cut into cubes)
Salt-to taste
Sambar Powder-2 tsp
Turmeric Powder-1/4 tsp
Garam Masala Powder-1/4 tsp
Coriander Leaves-3 tbs
Procedure:
1. In a mixer jar grind tomatoes, coconut and garlic to a fine paste.
2. In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add the spices.
3. Add onions and saute until golden.
4. Add the ground paste and add enough water to make it a gravy.
5. Add the sambar powder, garam masala, turmeric powder and salt.
6. Pressure cook for 3 minutes.
7. Open the cooker, add the tofu pieces.
8. Let the gravy boil for 5 minutes on medium flame.
9. Add coriander leaves and serve it hot.
yummy and colorful
Tofu is a common food in Malaysia. Suggest that you deep fry the tofu cubes (after molding it wits a pinch of salt) before putting in curry. Will taste awesome!
kurma looks delicious 🙂
adding sambar powder to kurma sounds new to me…

Hi, thanks for the helpful blog posts. Btw can you please tell me a few stores that sell Tofu packs in Madurai. Do the people at the supermarkets know about Tofu or will I have to search for the Tofu myself.
Tofu is available in all the stores I have visited. Nilgiris in natham road and Nila fruits near Vishal maal always stock up tofu..
Thanks, that is good to know. I’ll check at nearby stores and if it isn’t available, I’ll go to Nilgiris or Nila fruits.
Another great vegetarian item I have tried is Seitan (which is a high-protein food made from wheat gluten), but I’m assuming that seitan isn’t available in Madurai. If you’re familiar with any recipes based on wheat-gluten, that will be great. Thanks
I have tried making seitan once and it was so good. But as it was lot of work, I just stayed away from that. Here is the link for it. https://gayathriscookspot.com/2010/12/poached-seitan-wheat-meat/ you can use it any way you use paneer or mealmaker or tofu..
That is a remarkable accomplishment 🙂
I was hoping for an easier recipe with wheat gluten, I don’t think I can follow the instructions and make seitan correctly.
Btw do you know if packaged Seitan is available in any store in Madurai ?
I haven’t seen seitan in Madurai. If you could get gluten, then it is so easy. I think you can source it online…
Yes, I can get wheat gluten, but I need to find an easy recipe to make seitan from wheat gluten (using other ingredients available in Madurai)
Here is an easy recipe with gluten http://vegetarian.about.com/od/cookingtipstools/ss/HowToSeitan.htm
Thanks, I’ll try this recipe in a few weeks
